WebDisk – Cloud That Works for You: a tour of the services, from files to Kubernetes

“Cloud” has become a catch-all word: it holds everything from a place to drop files to platforms with hundreds of services whose names nobody can remember. When a provider's catalogue has two hundred entries, simply working out what you actually need becomes a project of its own – and the bill at the end of the month a surprise of its own.

Where does the name WebDisk come from?
We specialise in storing large volumes of unstructured data: files, images, recordings, backups. Hence the name – “a disk on the network”. The foundation of our offering is object storage compatible with S3 – a data access interface originating from AWS that has become an industry standard: the usual backup and synchronisation tools speak it, and so do programming libraries (aws-cli, s3cmd, boto3). Underneath runs Ceph – an open storage system proven in large installations around the world.
Billing is simple: you buy a package or pay for the space you actually occupy, and you scale that space as needed – you start with a terabyte and grow without changing your architecture. More in the article Object Storage in WebDisk.
What file services does WebDisk offer?
Three file services sit on top of the object storage – three, because different teams work differently:
- WebDisk Send – when you simply want to send someone a large file: you upload it, you get a link, you send it. No configuration.
- WebDisk Files – storing and sharing files within an organisation: links protected with a password, with an expiry date and a download limit, storage quotas for users, and alongside the browser interface – direct S3 access for tools; a file uploaded via aws-cli or rclone shows up in the panel and vice versa. Every organisation gets an isolated space with its own access keys and the option of server-side encryption.
- WebDisk Next – a managed instance of Nextcloud, a popular open groupware platform: documents, calendars, file synchronisation. You use it, we maintain the server and the updates. We explain what Nextcloud is in a separate article.
Backup: a copy that survives a bad day
WebDisk Backup makes incremental copies with deduplication (we store only changed, non-duplicate data), encrypted at the source – before they ever leave your machine. It supports file-level backup for Windows and Linux, block-level backup of whole disks, virtual machines and physical servers. A copy kept outside your own server room is a separate line of defence: before ransomware encrypts an environment, it routinely tries to destroy the local backups first. Compute cloud: applications close to the data
The WebDisk public cloud is a natural extension of the data layer: you launch virtual machines yourself, and we will prepare and maintain a Kubernetes cluster together with you – all of it where your files and backups already sit, without dragging terabytes halfway across the world. On top of that: separate private networks (VPC), site-to-site VPN, load balancers, firewalls and public IPv6 addressing; the panel is at cloud.dco.webdisk.io. Why choose a Polish cloud?

What will you not find at WebDisk?
We are not a hyperscaler and we do not pretend to be one. We do not have a catalogue of hundreds of managed services or regions on several continents – if your architecture requires replication between continents or highly specialised platform services, a global provider will be the better choice, and we say so plainly. Our proposition is different: a short catalogue you can understand in a quarter of an hour, data in the country, predictable costs and a human being on the other side of the ticket. Plus open standards – S3, Nextcloud, Kubernetes – instead of closed formats: migrating to us and away from us is about moving data, not rewriting architecture. Frequently asked questions
Do the services have to be bought as a bundle? No. Each one works on its own – companies most often start with backup or with sending files, because those require no changes to the existing environment, and add further services over time.
I have an environment with another provider or on my own servers. What does migration look like? You move object data with standard S3 tools, and with larger deployments we help with the planning. We described moving virtual environments step by step in the article about migration from VMware.
How does WebDisk look after data security? In layers: encrypted connections, the option of encrypting data at rest – enabled for the whole storage or for individual files – and isolation of each organisation's space. How does WebDisk Send differ from WebDisk Files and WebDisk Next? WebDisk Send is for a one-off transfer of a large file: you upload it, you get a link, you send it – no configuration. WebDisk Files is permanent storage and sharing of files within an organisation, with password-protected links and direct S3 access for tools. WebDisk Next is a managed instance of Nextcloud – a full groupware platform with documents and calendars, which we maintain for you.
